DYNAMIC MUTATIONS  is an international workshop of Advanced Design. The workshop will run using AutoDesk MAYA, Rhino3D and Grasshopper and other software and digital design tools. The workshop offers new design methods helping participants both in concept and practice. Active discussions on the contemporary issues of architecture and design will be held in order to provide participants with an opportunity to share their views and create their own project.

The workshop is going to be used as a platform utilising multi-layered techniques and production processes which can control intelligent geometries, calibration of parts and behavioral taxonomies, normalizing an innovative field of predictability. Exploring material intelligence, formal logic efficiencies and precision assemblies.


In the DYNAMIC MUTATIONS workshop we will emerge into Maya’s polygon modeling, pattern makingand animationtools, adaptive skin and kinetic structures, covering all the required basis and getting a taste of its more advanced features. We are going to simulate material properties and dynamic forces with Maya physics engine. Moreover, the design logic and generative processes, as well as the potential of parametric thinking as a resourceful tool for achieving diversity and complexity in generation and fabrication. Kinesis and morphosis will be the two keys of the workshop. The participants’ end result must present both characteristics of these aspects.

The goal is creating a project that each participant can proudly include in his portfolio using the state of the art programs and techniques.

For attending the workshop there is no previous software experience required.

–          Introduction in Mayapolygons and NURBS modeling

–          Simulation of material properties and dynamic forces with Maya physics engine

–          Animation tools and Maya skeleton system to control complex morphologies

–          Visualization and rendering techniques

–          Maya MEL script for creating customized tools and interface

–          Introduction in Rhino 3D

–          Parametric surface articulation with Grasshopper

–          Strategies for 3D printing

–          Lecture on project presentation


DYNAMIC MUTATIONS workshop will expand from 4 to 12 of July 2015
Daily meetings from 10:00 to 18:00h. at Union of Architects in Bulgaria, Sofia, Krakra 11 Str.
For attending the workshop there is no previous software experience required.
All projects will be published and an exhibition will be organized for the end of the workshop.
Participants need to bring their own laptops or workstations.
Drinks and lunch snacks are included.



Pavlina Vardoulaki /Greece&Bulgaria/AA School of Architecture, London

Pavlina Vardoulaki is Co-founder, Creative Director of “DesignMorphine“ and Principal of the “DesignMorphine Summer School“ 2015. Pavlina completed her MArch with Distinction at the AADRL. The diploma project “HyperCell” developed by Pavlina and her team: Ahmed Shokir, Houzhe Xu and Cosku Cinkilic, as part of the Theodor Spyropoulos Studio, was exhibited at the “Future Fest” exhibition 2015 organized by the NESTA. In 2012 she completed her MArch in Public Buildings and graduated as a valedictorian from the UACEG, Sofia. Her diploma project “Riverside Pebbles of Art” received the First Prize Award from the Chamber of the Architects and Honorary Diplomas from the Union of the Architects and the Municipality of Sofia. Pavlina also participated in a series of world conferences, collaborations and workshops such as: the collaboration of the AADRL with the Ferrari Design team in 2014, the Zaha Hadid Studio Vienna “en[Coded] Fields” workshop in 2013, the AA School of Architecture collaboration with Louis Vuitton – “Building fashion” in Paris, the X|A Omni[progra]chromatic Workshop in Athens 2011 and others. Pavlina worked in various architectural and interactive design projects at Minimaforms: “Emotive City”, the proposal “Museum as Cultural Laboratory” for the Guggenheim in Helsinki and the Round House Imogen Heap Stage design in London.

Jitesh Jidhav / India / AA School of Architecture,London

Jitesh graduated from JJ College of Architecture, India. He has worked on major high rise projects, iconic buildings and high end residential and commercial projects in India such as Crescent Bay High-rise Residential, Parel, India; Navroze High-end Residential, Pali Hill, India; Crescent Redevelopment Residential Project, Bandra, India; Brachs Residential Project, Andheri, India. Currently he is pursuing a master’s degree in architectural and urbanism (Design Research Lab) in the AA School of Architecture, London. He is greatly interested in enabling the computer to actively participate in the development of creative design via the use of computational processes.
