Second year BSc (Hons) Product Design students Harneel Heer and Maggie Ip have won a national competition to be named Vauxhall Young Designers of the Year.

The brief set by Vauxhall was to design features (such as lights, table or chairs) that would be suitable for inclusion in The Green Room – an enclosed area in the Vauxhall staff cafeteria / restaurant. The designs had to reflect Vauxhall’s embracing of the low-carbon sector, while also promoting a ‘green’ working environment. Harneel won the top prize for his table design, while Maggie won first prize in the chair category.

Harneel and Maggie each won a £100 cheque, tickets to watch England play Brazil at Wembley and an invite to tour the Vauxhall headquarters and manufacturing plant. After receiving the award Maggie said “the hardest aspect was designing a chair which fits the body and supports different weights. Thankfully I was confident on the material processing from what we’ve learnt on the course so far.”

“Winning the competition was an unforgettable experience. It really gives me encouragement and more confidence to become a product designer. It was really surprising to hear I’d won as this is the first time I’ve won a national competition!”
